Children’s cultural festival Vibrant, authentic, imaginative, energetic, contemporary and FUN! These words capture the essence of the Christchurch primary schools' cultural festival in the Town Hall auditorium this month (Monday 21 to Thursday 24 August). Cultural Festival 2000 is a showcase of multicultural performances, art exhibitions and celebrity MC's, including Atawhai Tibble, Kimo Winiata and Lisa Reedy. About 1500 children will perform. Traditional and contemporary performances will be given by some of Canterbury's most accomplished primary and intermediate school groups, representing Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island and pakeha cultures. Since it started more than 10 years ago, the festival has become a significant event for many Canterbury children to celebrate who they are and where they come from. Tickets are available from Ticketek or Christchurch Town Hall: $10 for adults and $5 for children (under 12). pic: Members of the group Te Whitinga, of Linwood Avenue School, on stage during a previous festival. cap: The festival is a unique opportunity to experience an authentic celebration of Aotearoa's different cultures - "He taonga na matou ki a koutou... our gift to you" |
