In a Nutshell

Wastewater decision:
Public consultation on Christchurch’s preferred choice for wastewater discharge has been rescheduled until early next year. Extra time will be taken to gain more thorough scientific data about the environmental impact of the options under consideration.

The consultation will be sought on two options: continuing to discharge into AvonHeathcote Estuary or building a pipeline at South Brighton to carry treated wastewater out to sea. The Council is now scheduled to make a final decision on the preferred option around the middle of next year.

Energy- saving home:
Helping people manage their energy use is one of the goals of a new showhome opening this month at 10 Leander Street, Papanui. Council energy advisor Nigel Chivers is setting up the showhome, which will demonstrate how to use energy more efficiently, advise customers on water conservation measures and promote the Christchurch Clean Air and Efficiency Incentives programme.

"The aim is to advise people on the most effective ways of improving the energy efficiency of their homes," says Nigel. On display in the typical 25-year-old Christchurch brick veneer bungalow will be services and products which make homes more comfortable as well as make the City a healthier place to live.

Phone For more information contact Nigel Chivers on 352 4488. He is also keen to hear from businesses offering innovative energy solutions.

Water Expo ’99:
School students’ studies of water will be judged and presented at a two- day expo in the Convention Centre on 27 and 28 October. This year students have been using information technology (IT) to study the water resource. Categories for the competition are: computer multi- media presentation, video presentation, and static display.

The expo is an initiative of the Council’s Water Services Unit.

Step on Up:
If a half- hour walk sounds like you, join one of the 30- minute walk groups that have been launched this spring under the banner Push Play with Active Christchurch.

The initiative is in support of the Hillary Commission’s national Push Play campaign, aimed at encouraging people to incorporate more activity into their daily routines. Weekly walks start at different locations.
