Maurice
on the cutting edge "When I bought the tree they told me it would grow to about three metres," says Addington resident Maurice Eldridge about his spectacular topiary. He planted the tree in front of his house about six years ago and began trimming it to look like a face. While he has enjoyed growing it, the size has become a problem. "I used to get the sun in my sun porch!" he says. Maurice has considered giving the tree a haircut but it is no easy job and besides, he quite likes the way the unruly top makes the topiary look "a bit mad". Because he lives in a cul-de-sac, few Christchurch people know the tree in fact it may be better known in Japan. "We often have Japanese students staying and theyre mad about it theres certainly a lot of photos of it in Japan!"
