Stepping stones accross a stream at Styx Mill Reserve Styx Mill a wetland asset
Styx Mill Conservation Reserve, which was officially opened last month, is ideal for walking, picnicking and seeing wetland birds. And soon, with the support of the Fish and Game Council, it will be designated "catch and release" for recreational fishing. The 52-hectare reserve runs along the Styx River and links the Groynes and Travis wetland areas. It has high biological and ecological values and will become an important educational asset. The entrance is at the western end of Hussey Rd, near Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Harewood.

For a Styx Reserve information leaflet contact the Council's Parks Unit in Civic Offices, ph 941 8639.
Smiling over pool tiling
'Add water and we're ready to swim!' says Matthew Lanyon, operations manager of Centennial Leisure Centre. Progress on the Council's new aqua leisure centres, Centennial and Pioneer, is going swimmingly and people can expect to leap in by early May.
  • At the Centennial site (Armagh St): tiling of both pools and the changing areas is complete; the suspended ceiling has been finished; work on the mechanical services (air conditioning and water treatment) is well underway; tiling of the pool deck will start shortly; construction of the carpark, and Elsie Locke Park nextdoor, is also underway.
  • At Pioneer (Lyttelton St): tiling of the training pool and changing areas is complete; tiling of the leisure pool and pool deck, and mechanical services work, is underway, and construction of the carpark is progressing well.
