The city-wide Major Sewer Upgrade

The Council has started a major sewer upgrade for the entire city that will involve the laying of more than 30km of new pipelines, several pumping stations, and the proposed construction of a large storage tank during the next 10 years at a cost of $36 million.

“These changes will allow our sewer system to cope with expected population growth in the next few decades and reduce the amount of sewerage overflows into the city’s rivers during floods, from around six a year to one every two years, on average,” says Mr Stockwell.

The result of several years planning, the upgrade will match capacity upgrades to the collection system at the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant.
