Northlands roading changes

The City Council has finalised plans for changes to the roads around the Northlands Shopping Centre. The work, to improve safety and access, is due to be complete by the end of November.

The Council received more than 70 responses about the proposed changes. Alix Newman, the Council's capital programme team leader, says that while some of the changes are fixed by conditions attached to the shopping centre redevelopment, some significant decisions have been made as a result of public feedback. These include:

  • Dropping the idea of a free left-turn onto Main North Rd from Langdons Rd to aid vision-impaired pedestrians, and waiting to see how traffic behaves before deciding about a right-turn arrow
  • Maintaining the length of median on Main North Rd south of Procter Street
  • Changing the location of bus shelters and bus stops on Main North Rd
  • Putting in signals at the mall entrance at Halliwell Ave and clearly marking it as a no-exit street
  • Putting three more car parks at the east end of Sawyers Arms Rd and keeping two more spaces opposite
  • Keeping the pedestrian crossing on the south side of the Sawyers Arms/Main North Rd intersection.

Detailed maps showing the changes are on display at the Council's Papanui Service Centre (cnr Langdons Rd and Restell St) and at Northlands Shopping Centre. More information can be found at www.ccc.govt.nz/Northlands/
