Call for comment on Square work

Public comment is sought on a proposed plan for the north-west corner of the Square, between Worcester Street and Colombo Street.

This, the fifth stage of the Square development, would see Worcester Street and the road through the north-west of the Square made into a one-way road from Oxford Terrace through to Colombo Street, with traffic running eastward.

“The plan would see the kerb on the north side remain intact and a new kerb line built on the south side that roughly parallels the north kerb,” says Chris Collins, the City Council’s manager for the project.

“One advantage of making the road one-way, from Oxford Terrace to Colombo Street, is that it provides more space for pedestrians. On Worcester Street, the changes will allow enough space to widen the footpath on the south side. Trees would be planted in this section to reinforce the Boulevard concept and connect the streetscape from the Square to the museum,”’ Mr Collins says.

A one-way road would also allow the development of larger pedestrian gathering and activity areas, particularly in the sunnierparts, including the steps in front of the Information Centre. More trees could be established in this area as well.

The Council is now calling for public comments on the plan, both to gain opinions on the ideas proposed and to gather any new information that may not have been considered.

  • Anyone wanting to comment on the plan should get their response in by 28 August. Posters and leaflets about the proposed changes can be picked up from the Information Centre in the Square (Old Post Office building) and at the Police Kiosk. A model of the proposal is on display at Our City (corner Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace) and more information is on the web, at www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay
