Board’s kohanga support

Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board chairman Phil Clearwater and Deputy Chairperson Sonia Gill inspect a new Board-funded mural helping to raise Oterepo Te Kohanga Reo’s community profile. The Maori language immersion preschool is within the grounds of Waltham School.

Its supporters put in an application for funding to the Community Board and were granted $1830. Waltham School supported the bid. Artist Ginney Deavoll’s mural on the kohanga’s end wall, facing the Hastings St East school entrance, depicts the group’s tamariki (children).

The kohanga has been operating from the building for more than 12 years. Its kaiwhakahaere, Georgina Andersen, told the Board the mural would make the operation more visible. “It will put our kohanga more out into the community and enhance both our kohanga and the surrounding community,” she said
