Safe with Age courses for elderly drivers

Safe with Age courses for elderly drivers
Plenty of discussion and practical work: Safe with Age courses are a good refresher for mature road users.

The City Council has some new volunteers to run the Safe with Age driving courses, so the door is now open for students to fill the courses.

Safe with Age courses are a good refresher for mature road users. They provide an opportunity for students to reflect on driving experiences, to share them with others, and to discuss recent changes to the road rules.

Five new coordinators have been appointed and trained in Christchurch, and they are now ready to run the courses in different locations around the city. The courses takes four hours– either in one session, or two two-hour sessions. The courses allow for plenty of discussion and practical work.

The City Council’s Road Safety Coordinator Coordinator Susan Cambridge says that Safe with Age are very popular courses because many mature drivers want to revise their driving skills, or need to take a refresher for driver’s licence requirements. Another aim is to make sure that everyone has fun learning, she says.

Safe with Age is a national programme run by volunteers to help older people improve their road safety and driving skills. The courses were developed by the Land Trandsport Safety Authority and are coordinated and supported locally by the City Council.
