QEII’s new leisure pool, based on the legendary lost continent of Atlantis, was officially unveiled last month to gasps of delight and amazement.

Among the first to try out the new pool were two classes of pupils from Somerfield and Avondale primary schools. They won pool parties in a city-wide competition. In the fortnight after it opened on 9 August about 30,000 people came in for a swim. The biggest day was 11 August when more than 3000 people took the plunge.
