Aside from roads, the Council owns 7416ha (18,540 acres) of land in the city – that’s 16 per cent of the TLA area Again, excluding roads, the Council administers 1650 sites, comprising 3034 property titles.

The built property assets of the Council include offices, service centres, libraries, parking buildings, leisure facilities, art gallery, crèches, utility sites such as pumping stations and sewage treatment works, community halls and centres, heritage buildings, transfer stations and housing.

The Council owns and administers the second-largest residential housing portfolio in New Zealand (behind Housing New Zealand Corporation), comprising 2650 residential units.

Apart from rental housing tenancies, the council administers 780 property leases covering land/buildings that it owns.

The Council owns/administers more than 50 listed heritage buildings, eg Takahe, Kiwi, Provincial Council Buildings, Robert McDougall Art Gallery.

The total asset value of the Council’s land and buildings is in excess of $640m.
