Many great ideas for Latimer Square
In recent public consultation around 450 individuals and
groups submitted their ideas on how to make Latimer
Square a lively and safe place for everyone to enjoy. The aspects of Latimer Square most liked by respondents
were natural features such as open green space, trees and
grass (55%), location close to town and an accessible park
for the east (17%), the quiet and attractive atmosphere
(12%), opportunities for passive and recreational activities
(12%) and heritage (11%). The aspects most disliked were vagrancy (35%), poor
facilities including seating, paths and lighting (29%), neglect or
lack of use (19%) the road dividing the two squares, traffic
noise (14%) and safety (9%). 47% favoured closing Worcester Street to through traffic,
42% wanted Worcester Street left open through the middle
as it is now and 11% preferred the option to narrow
Worcester Street, allowing two-way traffic but removing car
parks. Suggestions for enhancing the park included more seating
and lighting, more flowers or plants and colour and more
trees. Some people wanted cafes, markets, live music and
festivals, and some favoured sports and recreation facilities
or a playground. Others urged that the area be left tranquil
and passive. Some recommended retaining the heritage
character of the park while others preferred to look
forward, with something more innovative and modern. Over all, respondents wanted to see increased usage of
Latimer Square rather than radical changes to its form or
shape. This month a panel consisting of one representative from
each of the three council committees involved in this
project and the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board will
hear submitters who said they wanted to speak. On 9 December, a report based on submissions as well as
earlier consultation with the local community and the
Neighbourhood Improvement Plan will be presented to a
joint committee, before going to full Council later in the
month. Once a decision has been made on the future
direction for Latimer Square, landscape plans will be drawn
up and work is expected to start in mid-2003. |
