Central city market to open in January

A fresh produce market incorporating the sights, sounds and smells of a hustling, bustling market usually found on the streets of Europe is set to open on 18 January.

Located in the area adjoining the Tuam Street public car park opposite the City Council’s Civic Offices, the market will operate from early morning every Saturday and Sunday.

Stallholders so far include those selling bread, strawberries, nuts, muffins, honey products, fish, organic vegetables, organic juice, plants, flowers, specialty cakes and jams, with interest coming from sellers of berries, cheese, ice cream, wine and meat.

The Central City Mayoral Forum and City Council have for some time been championing the idea of a produce market in the Central City and although the location for the market is on Council land, Christchurch Market Ltd (CML), a recently formed company, is managing and driving the market.
