Riverbank to be landscaped

A landscape concept plan for the Heathcote River near the Malcolm Avenue bridge.
Improved landscaping on the riverbank of Waimea Terrace and Hunter Terrace, near the Malcolm Avenue bridge, could start next month.

Planting will be centred on a flowering-tree theme.

Either Magnolia kobus or more suitable trees will be used, along with mixed plantings, on the park-like areas and native grasses and low shrubs will be used on the river banks.

Residents made 73 submissions to the Parks and Waterways Unit in response to a questionnaire about river improvements.

Several meetings were held and suggestions made about planting were equally divided between exotic and native.

Once the planting is done the Parks and Waterways Unit will examine the need for a ramp with steps to a seating area.

Other matters raised during consultation included the Donkey Track area and the BMX track.

The Donkey Track will be tidied up soon and some thinning of foliage will be carried out.

Thinning of vegetation will also be carried out at the BMX track and a post and rail will be put across the entrance to the area to slow bikes.

A drivers’ warning sign will also be installed in Hunter Terrace near Malcolm Avenue.
