Planning starts on library and civic centre for south Christchurch

A City Council team is now working on a brief for the new combined library-learning centre-civic centre for south Christchurch.

Once finished, the brief will be sent to architects for their responses.

The community will have a chance to have a further say when the project is in its concept form.

The new building will be built on Council land at Beckenham where the service centre is sited.

A village concept has been proposed for the 2500 sq m building with spaces for small-scale entertainment, learning, meeting, browsing, taking coffee, a point for community gatherings and listening to music.

Drop-off library
A library drive-by drop-off and pick-up service could be a new feature.

The learning centre will be a first in New Zealand and have close ties with the Ministry of Education.

The best features of the newly built Fendalton and New Brighton libraries will be used at Beckenham.

The new building will service south Christchurch.

The existing services at Spreydon and St Martins will continue.

Starting collection
Beckenham’s library will serve a population of 45,000-50,000 and have a starting collection of 50 - 60,000 books.

The civic administration centre will have a high profile in the new building with the advocacy team based there.

It will be a civic centre — a local point for local democracy.
