Directory for people with disabilities

An information directory that lists recreation opportunities for people with disabilities in Christchurch has been published.

Put together by KiwiAble (a programme supported by Christchurch City Council and the Community Trust) and the Disability Information Service, the directory lists more than 90 sport and recreation facilities for people with disabilities. Options cover arts and crafts, theatre, leisure and fitness centres, recreation programmes, sports, home stays and tours.

KiwiAble Co-ordinator Trisha Ventom says that up until the publication of the "Recreation Directory for People with Disabilities", little information was available. "The directory lists what recreational and sporting groups exist, what facilities they offer, and how to join or become involved."

Trisha says the aim is to encourage an active lifestyle for people with disabilities.

"The directory gives people the chance to try something new. It’s also encouraged organisations to think about how they can enhance their facilities to make this possible," she says.

It is planned to update the directory, which is in large print, each year.

The directory can be bought from the Disability Information Service, 314 Worcester Street, phone 366 6189 or fax 379 5939 for $8 or $5 for KiwiAble Leisure Cardholders.
