Saving the past for future

Christchurch’s Central City — the public says more green spaces and flowers are needed.

Saving heritage buildings is important to most Christchurch residents.

They want them preserved, especially in the central city, as part of its character.

A particular area for heritage attention is the one bounded by St Asaph, Madras, Hereford and Colombo streets.

The heritage precinct strategy of the Central City Mayoral Forum would target the retention of buildings and reuse of them by "proactive engagement with owners; staged outcomes for upgrading buildings, street furniture, pedestrian-amenity quality, etc."

Already singled out for attention is High Street where the conservation of an entire block of heritage buildings between Lichfield and Tuam streets is a possibility.

This, says the Forum, will create an example for other central-city blocks to follow.
