Safety measures on main roads in Belfast

The Johns/Main North roads corner will be the first in Belfast to have signals installed. Delays for traffic turning from the main road into Johns Road are of concern

Improvements to the Main North Road through Belfast are being investigated by Transit NZ.

Johns/Main North roads signals
This will be the first stage in traffic signals within Belfast. The project is still in the planning phase and has yet to have funding approved for design. The existing delays for traffic turning into Johns Road are of concern as is the lack of pedestrian facilities.

Residents at a public meeting last month generally supported the proposal. A number of suggestions were offered at the meeting to minimise the impact of the changes, particularly during the night.

Belfast Rd and Richill St intersections
Belfast residents saw the Belfast Road intersection as a priority for traffic lights. However, it was recognised that signals at Richill Street would provide assistance for the shopping centre as well as giving relief from the continuous traffic flows over a greater length of Main North Road.

These projects would come under Transit NZ’s safety works budget. Traffic signals could be installed in the next two to three months. The signals would be co-ordinated to allow flow-through of traffic along Main North Road

Main North Road four lanes
A recent meeting heard about stage one of this project, which is already under construction. It extends the four lanes to and through the Radcliffe Road intersection. Work includes putting signals of the intersection of Radcliff Road and the entrance to the new Northwood subdivision.

Stage two of the project extends the four lanes to Redwood and includes the duplicating of the Styx Overbridge. This work is programmed for next year. A footpath and cycleway from Radcliffe Road to the Styx Overbridge will be part of this project.
