More for social initiatives

Another $500,000 is set aside under the draft annual plan for social initiatives.

This will take programme funds to $1 million over a four-year period.

The social initiatives programme has been instrumental in securing the Council’s role as a major influence in the social arena locally, nationally and internationally and its recognition as a progressive, innovative and responsible Council.

The programme has resulted in the leverage of significant outside funding for the city, the strengthening and development of community organisations, and measurable impacts and changes in people’s lives, particularly children and young people.

Also, the programme has led to better funding practices, improved co-ordination and collaboration among groups and among funders.

The increase in funding for the coming year was justified to enable the programme to be expanded and to counter the effects of inflation.
