Link up to improve the world

Derek Wenmouth introduces Astro to folks at the launch of Globalnet Link up to improve the world School students, educators and community leaders are among those being encouraged to join GlobalNet. 2000, a World Wide Webbased project aimed at finding “local solutions to global problems”.

GlobalNet. 2000 is one of Turning Point 2000’s projects celebrating the new millennium in Christchurch and Canterbury.

The core of the project is to communicate with others around the world to promote social action.

A website, www.globalnet.org.nz, is now online and features a character called Astro — a friendly site guide and project mentor.

Supporting the website is Astro’s eNews, a weekly newsletter which is emailed to subscribers. Project director Derek Wenmoth says that if only 10 per cent of those who take part in GlobalNet. 2000 manage to solve a community problem, the project will be worthwhile.

It is aimed at young people because they are the future decision- makers.

The project will young people of all cultures a greater awareness of issues facing them; encourage them to share ideas and solutions, and build relationships. It will teach them to use digital technologies and empower them to speak confidently - and be heard by community and world leaders.

In November this year an international GlobalNet. 2000 Summit will be held in Christchurch involving about 800 young people, leaders, policy and decisionmakers.

Registration forms and programme details are available online at www.globalnet.org.nz or from the GlobalNet. 2000 office — contact (astro@globalnet.org.nz) astro@globalnet.org.nz or phone 353-0352.
