Key Points

  • Christchurch residents are active users of the many facilities and recreation areas the City has to offer.
  • The annual SummerTimes Festival continues to attract large numbers of Christchurch residents. For example, it is estimated that nearly 120,000 residents attended the Southpower Classical Sparks concert.
  • Overall, residents were very positive about the SummerTimes Festival and its value to the community with 80 percent agreeing that the Festival makes Christchurch a better place to live.
  • The majority of City residents have taken part in some form of physical activity in the last twelve months.
  • Over two thirds of residents took part in a community based activity in the last twelve months
  • At June 1996, the Canterbury Public Library had 221,803 enrolled members.
