Events and Festivals - SummerTimes, 1995/1996

SummerTimes is an annual festival of free outdoor entertainment that is organised and managed by the Christchurch City Council. This festival consists of a wide variety of events which have taken place between the 31st December and the last week in February each year. Over the last six years the festival has grown both in size and popularity and now extends into March.

The 1995-1996 SummerTimes Festival Survey[41] commissioned by the Christchurch City Council showed that as in previous years, this year’s festival attracted large numbers of residents. For example, it is estimated that nearly 120,000 residents attended the Southpower Classical Sparks concert. While between 34,000 and 36,000 people attended the Teddy Bears Picnic, the Candlelight Opera, the Adventures of Robin Hood and Summer Rock (Table 1.19).
