Pupils teaching computer skills A pilot scheme to teach computer skills, with school children as the tutors, has just finished in Linwood. It was a success and the organisers hope the course will be repeated. It all started late last year when a group that included Eleanor Bodger and Paula Green of the Linwood Community Resource Centre, Elaine Sides of the Linwood Library and the principal of Linwood Intermediate School, Richard Wisnesky, met to develop some guidelines. The group wanted "to use resources in the community as well as being able to share the computer skills of some of the school children with adults." The programme was designed to give basic training in word processing, use of the Internet and some of the information available on the library’s databases. The library wanted to raise its profile, the resource centre wanted to make its facilities better known, and the intermediate school wanted to give some children the opportunity to develop as tutors. Overall the group wanted to forge links with the community. The first course has just finished. It was held over eight weeks with most sessions held at the school. About half a dozen members of the community took the course and said they enjoyed it and are now more familiar with computers. The pupil-tutors enjoyed sharing their skills with some older members of the community. The group hopes to offer another course next term.
