LYFE festival bigger and better
The festival will be held on Saturday 27 October at Linwood Park. It is a Linwood-focused event where youth pride, diversity and achievements are celebrated. LYFE sets out to demonstrate what is good in the Linwood community. The first festival in 1998 was held because of a negative image and youth decided to do something to turn the tide. Each year local youth, with the support of the LYFE committee, spend many hours planning the festival. Youth learn many valuable skills, including publicity, sponsorship, event management, media relationships, teamwork and co-operation. Last year’s festival featured local bands, a skateboarding competition, a break-dancing challenge, along with food stalls and displays by local groups. As well there was a wide mix of local visual and performing artists, cultural groups, sports demonstrations and competitions. The four-hour festival always focuses on youth, families and friends with a suburban-fair atmosphere. It also aims to develop pride and build strong positive relationships between the youth of Linwood and the community by featuring local youth achievements and providing opportunities for sharing information. Planning has started for this year’s festival. Organisers say they will welcome any local groups that want to take part in LYFE 2001 and also welcome interested sponsors. Each year support for the day comes from the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board, the Christchurch City Council’s Community Recreation Adviser, local businesses and community organisations, schools, churches, cultural groups, students and volunteers.
