Members of the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board took to the cycle ways for a closer look.

This was the first inspection made by the board and it was the fourth board to make such a trip with members of Spokes and the Council Cycle Steering Group. Tim Hughes of the Land Transport Safety Authority also joined the group.

The more than two-hour trip kept up a good pace with frequent stops at cycling points of interest.

Many suggestions were made regarding maintenance and improvements.A number of long-term issues were also raised and lively discussions were held along the cycle ways.

The group noted that tree roots can be obstacles, a lack of signage about shared pathways, and cycle logos on cycle lanes need repainting more frequently.

Also the group thought cycle lanes are often not wide enough and service centres should provide secure cycle stands.
