Your favourite tree?

We all have a connection with trees; be it a memory, a place of shelter or a reminder of the changing seasons. In the lead-up to Arbor Day this year, the Council wants to hear your personal stories about favourite trees.

Arbor Day is 5 June. You can vote now for your favourite tree at www.ccc.govt.nz/arborday and from 19 May you will be able to place your vote at any Council Service Centre or Library. Once voting has closed (on 1 June), the Council will name the Garden City's top three trees as voted by you.

Another highlight heading towards Arbor Day is a Know Your Roots workshop being held on 28 May, between 11am-2pm at Our City O-Tautahi. The workshop will cover all there is to know about trees.

Council arborists will talk and give pruning demonstrations, lead a tree walk and climbing demonstration along the Avon River and will be on hand to answer any questions you might have about trees, so bring your photos and twigs and learn about your tree.

Other events on the calendar in the lead-up to Arbor Day include public tree plantings at Charlesworth Reserve and Sandy Point, guided tree walks by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens ($2) and Our City O-Tautahi will host a Science in the City lecture.

  • For a full calendar of Arbor Day events or to tell us about your favourite tree, head to any Christchurch City Council Service Centre or Library, or visit www.ccc.govt.nz/arborday to help us choose the top trees of Christchurch -- the Garden City

Your favourite tree might be one that's great to climb, or sit under. Why not let us know?
