Two new school speed zones in

The City Council has given the go-ahead for two more 40km/h school speed zones, at Manning Intermediate and Ilam School.

A school zone is a designated area around a school were motorists are legally required to slow down to 40km/h at certain times of the day, typically before and after school hours. Zones are marked by signs 150-200m on either side of a school's road crossing.

Manning Intermediate principal Richard Chambers is delighted to have a school speed zone outside his school.

"We're on a very busy road (Hoon Hay Rd), so we're very much looking forward to the drop in speed," he says. "We had one near-miss last year and hopefully the speed reduction will negate another."

To obtain a school speed zone, schools first need to apply to the City Council for a technical assessment of the roads around the school.

There are now 16 school speed zones in Christchurch, covering 23 schools.
