Phil Price sculpture planned

The city's first permanent kinetic sculpture by acclaimed Christchurch sculptor Phil Price will be revealed as part of this year's SCAPE Biennial of Art in Public Space.

This will be the fourth biennial and, each time, the trust leaves an everlasting impression on the city in the form of one permanent artwork.

The Price sculpture, commissioned in conjunction with the Art & Industry Biennial Trust and the City Council, will cost about $110,000, with $40,000 granted from the Council's Art in Public Places budget and $70,000 from two private benefactors.

SCAPE 2006 runs from 30 September to 12 November and more details about Phil Price's new public sculpture will be revealed next month.

Phil Price graduated from the University of Canterbury's School of Fine Arts in 1989 and has become nationally and internationally acclaimed. His Zephyrometer, installed at Evans Bay in the capital, won the Meridian Energy Great Wellington Wind Sculpture Project in 2003. He also has significant public works installed in Auckland.

SCAPE is New Zealand's only international contemporary art biennial dedicated to public art. The new Price sculpture will be formally gifted to the city at the end of SCAPE 2006.
