Monte Cassino remembered
As part of commemorations for the Year of the Veteran, the Council's public exhibition space, Our City O-Tautahi, is currently hosting an exhibition called Return to Monte Cassino.
The display, which runs until 27 May, features work by photojournalist Maree Wilks, who in May 2004, accompanied Southland war veterans to the 60th anniversary commemorations of the Battle for Monte Cassino.
This exhibition has been expanded upon at Our City O-Tautahi, with contributions of stories and objects from veterans in Christchurch and Canterbury. Additionally, the exhibition offers insight into the work of Rannerdale War Veterans' Hospital and Home as it approaches its 50th anniversary celebrations.
