First stage of rail trail to open

After seven years of planning, the first stage of the Christchurch to Little River Rail trail will open on Sunday, 28 May.

The first section is a development of the old Christchurch to Little River railway line from Motukarara to Catons Bay, Little River. The flat 20km section gives access to Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere, a wetland of international environmental significance and also home to the historic Kaituna Quarry.

Following the opening ceremony, the public will be able to walk, cycle or run this very special part of Canterbury for the very first time.

Opening day promises to be a fantastic day for all the family; an opportunity for people to come out and experience a new resource right on Christchurch's doorstep. People are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the Kaituna Quarry halfway point.

The project involves several stakeholders working together to ensure its success, including the City Council, Environment Canterbury, the Department of Conservation, Selwyn District Council, Rotary and five runanga.

The rail trail is also the culmination of many hours of voluntary work by members of the community. The opening event is a chance to say thank you to everyone involved and also an opportunity to fundraise for remaining sections.

Little River Railtrail Trust members Liz Todhunter and Craig Mason try out the new trail.
