2006 Shirley/Papanui Heritage Awards

Rehua Marae was this year’s venue for the Shirley/Papanui Heritage Awards presentation. The nine Heritage Award recipients, along with their friends and families braved the cold morning on 12 July by joining Community Board members, marae representatives, the judging panel and Council staff for a successful morning of waiata, speeches, food and of course the awards presentation itself.

After being welcomed on to Rehua Marae, the attendees were addressed by Terry Ryan, member of the Rehua Marae Trust Board, followed by an acknowledgment from Bill Bush, Shirley/Papanui Community Board member.

Judges' comments were made by Jenny May, Principal of Heritage Management Services Ltd, then followed by the awards presentation. The awards were announced by Yvonne Palmer, Shirley/Papanui Community Board Chairperson and presented by Terry Ryan and Myra Barry, Shirley/Papanui Community Board Deputy Chairperson. Closing remarks were made by Yvonne Palmer. Following the formalities, we had the pleasure of listening to historic stories of Rehua Marae and singing some waiata while we waited for the kettle to boil for morning tea.
