Range of views on N Brighton

The closing date for public submissions on the future development of the New Brighton Mall area on Marine Parade has been extended to 25 August, following a successful run of open days attended by more than 600 residents.

The open days presented a range of scenarios relating to future development of Marine Parade in the area bound by Rawhiti Domain, south to Shackleton Street, and around the general New Brighton Mall business zone.

Although the scenarios did not portray any particular options set in concrete, they aimed to gauge public opinion on high-density development scenarios and their likely effects.

The public was asked to comment from 1 July to 4 August and more than 250 submissions have been received to date. This continued high level of interest from the community has resulted in the submission period being extended to give everyone a chance to have their say on this special area.

Council planner Jonathan Clease says that while most of the 250 submitters want something done to help revitalise the “shabbier” parts of New Brighton, there is a wide spectrum of views as to how to achieve this.

Submissions range from those supporting the existing one-two storey built environment to those who believe 15-storey buildings are too low. The most common response, however, is that a mix of heights from three to eight stories would suit, as long as the taller buildings are well-designed and appropriately sited.

Another strong response was that the foreshore area surrounding the whale pool and surf club should remain largely open space with any future development limited to smaller-scale buildings for public recreational and community uses, Mr Clease says.

Further technical reports – looking at everything from ground conditions to shading – are now available on the Have Your Say site through the www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay internet website, and hardcopies are available from the New Brighton library for public comment.
