Hagley/Ferrymead Board’s 2006 Heritage Awards
The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board is again calling for nominations for its annual Heritage Awards. This will be the 10th anniversary of the awards, which evolved from a vision by Councillor Anna Crighton. It was important to her that not only the owners of big, impressive buildings were targeted, but also the more modest worker’s cottages in the area as well as villas, commercial, retail and cultural buildings and historic sites. The success of the awards over the years reflects the community’s great commitment to its heritage. Running since 1997, the awards were set up to recognise the efforts of the community in initiatives taken to preserve the built or constructed character and heritage of the Hagley/Ferrymead area. One award will be made for each of the following categories:
• Retention — a building previously under threat of demolition but now secured for the future by either private or community initiative
• Conservation and Restoration — In the past year items must have undergone or be part of a staged conservation and/or restoration programme
• Education and Awareness — initiatives by individuals or community groups to promote heritage education and awareness
• Children — aimed at raising the heritage awareness of the young and to encourage them to be proactive within their local environment
• Good Caretaker — to recognise property owners who have maintained properties in original or near-original condition for some years
• Pre-1850 Award — to recognise Maori and European cultural heritage sites significant to tangata whenua prior to organised European settlement.
• The Supreme Award — recognises efforts by business and retailers in the City Centre to preserve or maintain a heritage building.Entry is open to any heritage or character buildings, places or objects within the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board area and can include homes, commercial/retail, industrial, institutional and streetscape and community heritage areas.
