World Clean Up on again

This year’s Clean Up the World event runs from mid-month for about three weeks and the City Council is encouraging groups and organisations to get involved and help improve the environment.
“If you’re keen to help in the big tidy up, give us a call on 941 6487 to talk over where you could help,” says Council organiser Cam Sheppard. “The idea is that if we have lots of small groups making an effort in their area, it makes a big difference collectively.”
Already about 45 groups have registered and between them, it’ll mean more than 3000 volunteers will spend a few hours collecting material in different parts of the city.
This year, staff from Holcim’s head office will be giving their local parks, Barrington and Addington, a tidying. The Clean Up fits the company’s desire to contribute to the community. Last year they found a trailer-load of material to remove.
Holcim’s Clean Up organiser, Robyn Flynn, says about 20 staff volunteered to take part last year and she thinks more will have a go this time. The firm has approached other nearby business to also take part and is encouraging other Holcim branches to look at the event.
“The response so far’s been good,” Robyn says. |
