Park To Pier perfection

Would you like to spend more time on your bike but haven’t the time? For one lucky cyclist taking part in this year’s free Park To Pier
family bike ride on 30 October, that’s what will happen.

The City Council and Rydges Hotel Christchurch will take on the winner’s chores. Experts from the Botanic Gardens will assess the winner’s property for an easy-care spruce-up with plants from the Council’s nursery at Linwood. Then, on a weekend that suits the winner, a team of gardeners from City Care’s parks maintenance division will come around and do all the work. As well, the Council’s vehicle cleaning contractors, Ultimate Car Wash Cafe, will clean the car and Council’s Animal Control people will take good care of any pets.

While we’re walking the dog, you get on your bike — staying over at Rydges’ Hotel while their room service team pops out to do the winner’s housework.

This year’s Park To Pier ride has two starting areas, with a shorter course starting at Porritt Park to encourage the less fit and younger riders to take part. The usual course will start at Hagley Park at 9.30am, and those at Porritt Park will start at 10am. Everyone taking part will get a certificate and a City Council water bottle filled with water from the tap, part of efforts to promote the city’s pure water supply.

Park To Pier registrations open on Monday, 12 September. There are several ways to register. You can fill out a form in the brochure available from Council libraries and service centres and either put it in a drop box or freepost it by 24 October. The easiest option for larger groups is by on-line registration (by 26 Oct) at www.ccc.govt.nz/Recreation/Cycling/ActivitiesEvents/ParkToPier.asp

You can also call the Council on 941 8999 by 26 October to register your details. There’s also a solution for those who make up their mind late in the piece. You will be able to register on the day, but it would pay to be there early.
