New park clearance started
The City Council has begun clearing the central-city block of land known as the Turners and Growers site (most of the block bordered by Tuam, Madras, Lichfield and Barbadoes streets).
The work, which is being done by contractor Southern Demolition and Salvage, began on Monday, 29 August. The site is expected be cleared before Christmas.
“Emphasis has been placed on the deconstruction rather than demolition of the buildings to ensure the maximum amount of material can be reused or recycled,” says John Craig, the Council’s project manager.
“It’s likely that one large building will be sold and removed, while all concrete will be crushed and left on site for reuse by the developer.”
In April the Council entered into a development agreement with Urban Winery Christchurch which provides for UWC to develop a “central-city urban village”.
As part of the agreement the Council is responsible for the demolition of existing buildings and site clearance.
The Council expects the development — which includes residential accommodation, an hotel with an operating winery, a retail market square, basement car parking, and a public open area — will be a strong contributor to its central-city revitalisation programme.
