Masters Games – getting active

Christchurch will be well represented next month when more than 4000 athletes of all shapes and sizes converge on the city to take part in the South Island Masters Games.
The 8-16 October event is core-funded by the City Council and many Council venues will be used for the myriad of sports on offer.
Masters Games are an ideal first competition experience for newcomers to sport, at the same time providing competition for veteran sportpeople still looking for a challenge. They are renowned as the “friendly games” and offer a chance for sportspeople to take part regardless of age, experience or motivation.
Council Community and Recreation Manager Lesley Symington says that the organisers are urging potential participants to enrol in as many events as they like. Age groups generally start at 30 but a number of codes do cater for a lower minimum entry age.
Ms Symington says that the event is in line with one of the Community Outcomes included in the Council’s current Long Term Community Plan.
“One of these outcomes is that Christchurch be ‘a city of healthy and active people’. This event encompasses this outcome and encourages people to lead long and active lives,” she says.
