Kids’ message: Water for Life
Water for Life is the name of a new programme offered to schools by the City Council’s Learning Through Action education team. Teachers are being offered a chance to preview the programme on Wednesday, 14 September, 3.30-5pm.
The new Water for Life programme is run from the Water Pumping Station on Colombo Street. Through a range of fun, creative and interactive activities, students are introduced to the need to value and conserve Canterbury’s precious water.
From the aquifers to our taps, students will discover how Christchurch people come to have some of the world’s best water. Evidence of the value placed on water by a range of cultures throughout history is shown through the introduction of the wild and imaginative mythical creatures that exist to act as guardians and protectors of water sources.
Touring the facility and checking out the groundwater tanks, the retired submarine engine and the control room have proven to be highlights for the students that have helped in trials to develop the programme.
The programme ends with a Snakes and Ladders-style game, with a twist. A large board game is run using students as board pieces. Student groups can advance their human markers by correctly answering questions about water consumption and conservation.
Learning Through Action offers schools a selection of 19 programmes that cover a wide range of Council themes and are delivered at a number of key Council sites. They cover topics such as heritage, water, waste and biodiversity. The programmes are packaged for schools as fun, free curriculum-linked, teacher-designed and interactive programmes.
