Community Boards say ‘thanks’
Colin Ford and Richard Gamblin with Cr Carole Evans, the Deputy Mayor. Messrs Ford and Gamblin were nominated for their seven years of work with the Parklands Handiscope.
Community Service and Youth Awards were handed out at presentations throughout the city recently, recognising the efforts people put in to make our communities better places.
The awards, presented by the city’s six community boards, follow nominations made by people in the community. They are presented to recipients in front of their friends and families.
Deputy Mayor Carole Evans, a Burwood/Pegasus Community Board member, says all boards place a lot of value on these awards. “It’s a community board’s way of saying `thank you’ to people in its community,” she says.
“The beauty of these awards is that they’re very localised. Awards are nominated by local people in the community and presented to people in the community by the community board.”
Many of this year’s award winners are volunteers.
“The city owes them so much; without their contributions it could potentially cost ratepayers a lot of money,” Mrs Evans says. “Community boards really can’t thank these people enough.”
The Burwood/Pegasus Community Board’s award presentation was held at the North New Brighton War Memorial Hall this year — the hall’s first event since its refurbishment.
