Carter Group Heritage Week celebrations 7-14 October
Join in the week-long celebration of Christchurch’s rich heritage in events ranging from open days, seminars and lectures to guided tours, exhibitions, displays and guided walks. Car ter Group Heritage Week is happening between 7–14 October.
In its 13th year, this community event celebrates Christchurch’s architectural, social and environmental heritage. Initiated and corefunded by the Christchurch City Council ($50,000), Heritage Week is supported by sponsorship from Christchurch businesses Carter Group, Aalto Colour, Beca, Fletcher Construction and by a grant from The Canterbury Community Trust.
Local community and business groups run events and activities focused on aspects of local heritage and history for residents and visitors to Christchurch. Highlights throughout the week include:
- Official opening, Friday 7 October
- Governance workshop for industry professionals by Sir Neil Cossons, chairman of English Heritage, Friday, 7 October
- Restoration workshops Saturday, 8 October
- Antiques roadshow Sunday, 9 October
- Public talk by Sir Neil Cossons Sunday, 9 October
- A Heritage Pursuits Quiz Evening at Warners Historic Hotel Thursday, 13 October
Every year Carter Group Heritage Week has a particular focus. This year’s theme is Restoration – Hands-on Heritage. The significant historical milestones that will be highlighted during Carter Group Heritage Week are:
- 150th anniversary of the creation of Hagley Park
- 100th anniversary of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament
- 100th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Exchange Building, now the Regent Building
- 25th anniversary of the new Civic Offices
- 40th anniversary of the Waitaha Cultural Festival
