About 500 turn up for park movie

Despite a showery, cool evening a crowd of more than 500 turned up at Linwood Park recently to enjoy the movie Bend it Like Beckham. Enter tainment before the film included an Irish duo called Bang your Frog, Linwood Intermediate’s kapahaka group, a Zimbabwe dance trio called Triple Tees and Rhythm Section, a 15-strong hip hop dance group that grew out of November’s LYFE, the Linwood Youth Festival Experience. The SummerTimes event, which was arranged to coincide with the week of Race Relations Day, was funded by the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board with suppor t from NewsTalk ZB and Classic Hits. Young people from the Diverse Youth Café helped out with event management. It was a good opportunity for local families to enjoy a fun evening out together in a local park. Community groups such as local scouts and guides took the opportunity to do some fundraising. A few days earlier, the outdoor movie evening was staged at Avonhead’s Crosbie Park, with the support of the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board.
