Regional landfill is operating
Disposal of residual waste from Canterbury communities began early last month at Kate Valley Landfill.
For most of last month there was a gradual buildup of landfilling as waste transfer stations in the region converted to the new containerised transport system.
Construction of the Kate Valley Landfill began in June 2004 and Gareth James, the General Manager of Canterbury Waste Services (CWS), says completing it in a year was a great effort.
“A superb performance by the many and fill is operating contractors involved has enabled completion of what would normally be 18 months work in 12 months. What’s more, the landfill is likely to be completed within Transwaste’s budget,” he says.
CWS is responsible to Transwaste Canterbury for developing and managing the landfill. It employs 15 staff members at the site.
