Our City O-Tautahi’s a community space

You may have known it as the Information Centre. Before that it was the Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and it was built to serve the city as its Municipal Chambers — the City Council’s first and only purpose-built home.

In 2002 the beautiful old building on the banks of the Avon River returned to City Council use, as Our City O-Tautahi — a space for Council and the community to present ideas, information and viewpoints through exhibitions and displays, meetings and lectures.

So what’s available? Downstairs are two exhibition spaces that community group can use at reasonable rates of hire. Their hire includes access to exhibition equipment, and the help of Our City staff in planning an exhibition.

Upstairs, the original Council debating chamber and councillors’ library are available for community functions, meetings and lectures. Venue hire is available anytime and all spaces have disabled access.

Science in the City

The new series of public science lectures at Our City O-Tautahi, in association with the Canterbury branch of The Royal Society, is attracting good audiences.

These free monthly Science in the City lectures present a variety of topics based around current community concerns and our local environment. They run at lunchtime (1.10-1.50pm) on the last Wednesday of each month.

A speaker from Environment Canterbury, the regional council, will provide July’s lecture, entitled How We Know Where the Smoke Comes From — a topical talking-point in the midst of another smoggy winter.

April’s lecture was about the developing Avian influenza situation, while in June Dr Paul Scofield of Canterbury Museum delivered a lecture entitled Haast’s Legacy: Science at Canterbury Museum.
