Memorials shifted

World War 2 memorial plaques on Memorial Avenue — on the median strip at the Greers Road intersection and near the airport welcome sign — have been moved to give them greater prominence. The Council worked with the Returned Services Association to find more accessible spots for them and settled on the verges at the Clyde Road intersection and near the Sudima Hotel at the airport end of the avenue.

When the plaques were first laid, in November 1959, drivers using the avenue were exhorted to spare a thought for the men and women who died serving in the 1939-1945 war. The trees down the centre of the avenue were planted as a symbol of life.
