Posters available in 11 languages

Posters giving instructions and tips on how to use green recycling crates correctly are now available from the City Council in 11 languages.

The aim is to help Christchurch’s ethnic communities learn more about recycling, and get the best possible use from their green recycling crates.

Frances Nixon, from the City Council’s city water and waste unit, says the decision to translate the “Help Us Recycle” poster, sent out citywide with the rubbish bag coupons last month, was in response to the growing number of ethnic groups in the city.

“There had been a demand for some time from different communities, who wanted assistance on how to recycle and dispose of their rubbish.

“The reduction in the yearly allocation of Council rubbish bags from 52 to 26 was also a factor.”

Frances says the City Council wanted to work with the community to ensure people had the right information so they could dispose of their rubbish wisely.

“The Council held focus groups with representatives from these communities after the posters were translated, to ensure the information provided was accurate and useful,” says Frances.

The posters are available in 11 languages including Afghani; Cambodian; Chinese; English; Ethiopian; Japanese; Korean; Russian; Somali; Thai and Vietnamese.

  • The posters are available from the Civic Offices in Tuam Street, your local service centre or see www.ccc.govt.nz/waste
