Financial boost for local arts Eighty-two local community-based arts and cultural projects have received grants in Creative New Zealand’s Communities Grants Scheme latest funding round. The grants, totalling $107,000 were made to specific community arts and cultural projects taking place in Christchurch, which benefit Christchurch citizens. One of the largest grants, $4000, was made to the Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival Trust for the staging of the cultural festival. Ninety-three applications were received, the majority being for performing arts and visual arts projects. The Christchurch City Council has worked in partnership with Creative New Zealand since 1995 to distribute funds to local projects that make the arts more accessible to people, and increase community interest and participation. The City Council administers the arts funding locally. It receives $5000 plus 60 cents per resident each year (around $200,000 for 2004/ 05) from Creative New Zealand. This is split into two funding rounds, the first for projects that commence after June 1, and the second for projects that commence after 1 December. Applications for the next funding round close on 26 September 2004. An information evening about the scheme is being held on Wednesday 11 August from 6-8pm in the Elizabeth Kelly Room at The Arts Centre.
