The City Council is recruiting 60-70 lifeguards in August and September to work at its 13 swimming pools. Applicants must hold a current first aid certificate and attend a three-day course to gain the National Pool Lifeguard Award. The next course is on 23, 24 and 30 August, with another planned for 7, 14 and 21 September. "It is a great job for young sporty types as well as more mature men and women with the life skills to cope with the job's physical and mental challenges," Judy says.

It would also suit women returning to the workforce and anyone who enjoys the flexibility of shift work. "Compared with jobs in shops and many other roles, it is also well paid."

A day's work could also include monitoring water quality, looking out for unsupervised children, cleaning the pool area, keeping swimmers safe and keeping up to date with first aid qualifications.

"We all have career pathways and are working towards unit standards in job-related diplomas and certificates," she says. "After only a couple of years here, I am learning to assess and train lifeguards."

Judy and many other QEII lifeguards are keen sportspeople. They enjoy being able to slip into the pool or gym before or after work. Judy says she particularly enjoys the training opportunities that the City Council provides its lifeguards.
