A celebration and a farewell
The Robert McDougall Art Gallery’s doors close for the last
time on 16 June, 70 years to the day from when they first opened
as the home of Christchurch’s public art collection. The McDougall has been a much-loved institution, home to the
work of some of New Zealand’s finest artists and with visitor
numbers among the highest of any art gallery in the country. It has achieved this with great support from residents and
ratepayers. The McDougall has also been treated generously by
sponsors, both locally and nationally. We want to say a very big thank you for that. Such support is
vital if museums are to bring the best and the liveliest programmes
to the community. We’d also like you to come and help us
celebrate the last 70 years and bid farewell to this charming
gallery. Over the weekend there will be music — from Italian madrigals
to jazz — and a chance to learn something about what goes on
behind the scenes at the gallery. Why do they wear those white
cotton gloves? How do they choose what works to buy? If
you’ve got a question, we’ll do our best to answer it. Saturday 15 June 10am – 4pm Up from the Basement – behind-the-scenes at the
