Walk to School Day for City
Christchurch will be taking part in New Zealand’s first National Walk to School Day on 9 November 2001.
The Hillary Commission and the City Council will promote the event as part of their Push Play Week in November. The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority is also supporting the event. It’s a great chance for the health, education and transport sectors to work
together on child health and safety.
Taking part in WTSD shows commitment to:
- Encouraging safe and active travel to school.
- Improving traffic safety around school.
- Empowering people to take action to make their communities safer.
- Increasing awareness of children’s health and physical fitness.
- Making schools a more pleasant environment.
All primary schools in Christchurch can take part. Support has come from Sport Canterbury, Active Christchurch, and Crown Public Health.
Some ideas we’ll be promoting are:
- Getting schools to register as taking part to build up momentum and media interest.
- Holding sports pack prize draws for all participating schools.
- Forming drop-off points to allow far away children to take part.
- Getting sporting personalities to walk with children.
Last year more than 40 schools took part. More information will be available soon.
