Four more Living Streets on cards
The first was part of Peverel Street, Riccarton. A Living Street is a broad term used to describe a wide range of techniques, initiatives and activities that endeavour to instil a sense of collective ownership and pride. An ideal is that streets should be designed with the priority on living and community interaction, where residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists, at the very least, have equality with cars. Improving the quality of life by reclaiming the "living" component of our streets is another aim. The four Living Streets projects under way are Geraldine Street, St Albans, Creyke Road, Ilam,Aynsley Terrace, St Martins, and Harvey Terrace, Avonside. All are still at the "listening" and "information gathering" stage of the collaboration process. These streets represent a diverse range of traffic environments from a local road such as Harvey Terrace through to Creyke Road an arterial road. Each will present unique challenges to the Living Streets Team. Geraldine Street, Harvey Terrace and Creyke Road are all scheduled for kerb and channel renewal in the near future and this will provide an ideal opportunity to change the character and appearance of the street if so desired. Aynsley Terrace, however, is not scheduled for kerb and channel renewal and will provide the opportunity for exploring other methods of improving the quality of life. Living Streets is a collaborative process where the Council enters into partnership with the public in each aspect of the decision, including the development of alternatives and the identification of the preferred solution. The Council makes a promise to the public that it will look to residents for direct advice and innovation in formulating solutions. Also, the Council promises to incorporate the public advice and its recommendations in decisions to the maximum extent possible. The Council wants to receive feedback on Living Streets.
